Sprinkle it, mixed with salt, into the carpets, making sure to brush it into the corners and edges. Wait about two days, and vacuum it up. Be careful, though, if you have a really good Hepa filter - you'll have to clean it frequently when vacuuming the Borax back up. I've also used it to wash my massage sheets, to counteract the oil smell. Borax really is a very useful, yet inexpensive, thing to keep around the house.
