As you may already know, I’m currently pregnant with our second baby and contemplating our cloth diapering options once again. With Roscoe we used prefolds and covers exclusively until he was a year old and then experimented with a few types of pocket diapers. Although we didn’t plan on it, my husband and I immediately found that we far preferred pocket diapers to prefolds. For more rantings on why I love them so much, check here.
It seems a shame to buy a whole batch of pocket diapers when we have prefolds on hand in all sizes, but it’s been interesting to talk with other cloth diapering parents. One mother I met used prefolds with her first, pocket diapers with her second and ended up buying all-in-ones for her third child. This seems far too expensive to me, but I can see how with each child a parent would crave a more convenient cloth diapering system. Of course pocket diapers and all-in-ones require more laundering but they are easier to put on, whereas at least with prefolds you can pay a bit extra for a diaper service.
So, those of you who are cloth diapering your second or third child, what have you found to be the best system for you? Did you switch with your second or continue using your original cloth diapering system? I’d love to hear your stories!

We used pockets with our first…and same with our second
We have some prefolds but continue to reach for the pockets – much easier
We used OS BG on or first who is 18 months old. We started him in cloth at 5 months.
With our second we are using prefolds with some fitteds and all in ones. I was able to get a wide variety of diapers–pockets, fitted, OS, bamboo, hemp, and covers at a store that was going out of business. Most diapers were 40% off.
When I started with cding my first I did not venture out and just used OS, but bc of the sale I was able to find we will be using all different types of diapers at first but once my second reaches around 15 pounds he will mostly be is his brothers OS seconds that now consist of FB os and BG os.
We started with prefolds, but after purchasing a few pocket diapers (BumGenius 3.0), we decided that we liked them the best. I am sure any pocket diaper would be fine, these are the ones that were available at our locally owned baby store. We did get one AIO, but I have to say I always put it in the back of the drawer and use it last, if at all, during each round of diapers (I wash them every 3 days approx.) I thought I would like AIO’s best, but they take so long to dry. Pockets are the way to go in my opinion.
Our local seller recommended starting with xs AIO’s for the very beginning. Then at about 3-4 months when he grew into his Bum Genius 3.0 1 size pockets we stuck with those. I liked the convenience of AIO’s but like others have said they took WAY to long to dry…and stained easily. 1 size pockets are our favorites for sure. They’ve held up beautifully so i’m sure they will make through any other diapering babies we will have in our future.
I used fuzzibunz with my 1st, and prefolds w/ covers for my 2nd. I far prefer the prefolds. There’s definitely a convenience to the pocket diapers, but I really like the variety of covers I can get, and for me, stuffing the pocket diapers takes just as long as getting the prefold ready…. snappis make it so east, I think.
Our second baby hasn’t even been conceived, but I’ll probably stick with what I used for my first — prefolds and fitteds. I tried the Bumgeniuses that everyone loved and HATED them. The washing was so fiddly to keep them absorbent. Maybe it’s our soft water? I loved the prefolds because they dried quickly and I love the fitteds now that she’s bigger because she can run around coverless at home. I plan to use these diapers until they’re rags or my kids are potty trained
Such a good questions!
We did straight prefolds and covers for my first (a mix of wool and plain old covers) and it was great to have those basics for my second, but………………
wow, things were different with the second. I went with a dozen motherease fitted, had the prefolds for back-up and did a lot of ECing which was AMAZING! We’ve been having the best dipey/potty experience with koala, age 18 months.
