The Saturday Question: Which Are the Best Summer Baby Slings?

Although my first child loved his fleece pocket sling, our second will be born in the summer and may find it too warm. Does anyone have a suggestion for a great summer sling that might keep baby cooler than fleece could? Your suggestions will help those of us preparing for warm-weather babies.

I didn’t do much babywearing with my son when he was a newborn because of a bad experience I had with some carriers.
So I don’t know how this sling would work with a newborn but I loved my hotsling. I have heard good things about peanut shells as well. That might be something you could do in the summer.

I also had a very similar experience as the last poster Kimber. I just recently got a hold of a Hotsling off craigslist and LOVE it! I wish i had found one earlier. My mini-man sits on my hip very comfortably and i have both my arms free. I’ve read great reviews about holding a newborn in it too. There is minimal stretchy cotton fabric so its breathable and light. Here in FL its HOT and humid almost all the time and this has been the only carrier that works for us. And these also have a great resale value, ebay bids get up to full price on used!

Linen (in a medium or 5.3oz weight) is perfect for summer. It’s very strong, and the linen fibers tend to wick away moisture instead of letting it sit like cotton. There’s a wide range of ring slings available in linen, but I don’t think you’re likely to find a linen pouch. However, a ring sling is (IME) easier to use in terms of nursing and whatnot than a pouch, since you can adjust the ring sling to your needs.

I am due with #3 in a few weeks and I really like the sling I purchased from http://www.blueberriest.com! It is very lightweight and breathable. My son loved it and I really didn’t “die” wearing him in the summer!

i used a linen sling and a cotton maya wrap ring sling in the summer, and both were nice. i know some companies make slings in wicking fabrics or even ones to wear at the beach in the water if you want something even more specifically geared to summer heat.
