This is a wonderful idea. I will have to remember this when my little girl gets a little older.

My brother and I did something similar to this when we had a whole family of gerbils. They LOVE to chew on cardboard, so we made them a cardboard house complete with ramps to upper floors and paper towel tube connector from their cage. It was a lot of fun. They chewed it bit by bit until it was a huge fluffy nest in their cage.

Wanted to say thanks for this. I am plowing throguh finals right now and have three beautiful kids who are dealing with mommy cramming and staring at the computer for hours... this is a great idea using what I have on hand to add some sparkle to their days.

This is definitely more practical than the solar-powered doll house that costs about $200.

Wow, this is awesome. I hope I do creative stuff like this with my kids someday instead of plopping them in front of the TV. Actually, I KNOW I will. :) Great post!

I made my own dollhouse when I was little (though older than Audrey--I was about 9). I took the top-down approach (no ceiling, one-story house) and used a box that was about 6 inches tall and maybe 24 inches by 14 inches? I used an old scrap of towel to carpet the two bedrooms and made room dividers out of cardboard which I glued into place. I made beds out of little boxes, covered with cloth scraps. An empty spool with a square of cardboard glued on top became the kitchen table. A sponge cut lengthwise with one part glued perpendicular to the other became the living room sofa. And so on. I had so much fun making this and it cost my parents literally nothing (except for buying the mouse "dolls" who inhabited the house). And I had no idea at the time that I was recycling!

I LOVE this!!! I remember my brother and I used to make forts when we were little out of chairs and blankets, but this really stepped it up a notch. Not only does your child get something neat to play with, but they'll feel a sense of pride in creating a beautiful piece of art. Then, we they outgrow it, you don't have to haul it anywhere but the recycle bin!! Just great! :-)
