We’ve posted quite a bit about organic gardening over the years. Our own organic gardens and lawns have had their ups and downs. What do you do to “green” your garden?

These were my tomatoes last year. This year’s tomatoes need some help. . . .

Organic and sustainable gardening for the family is a passion of mine and some of my favorite finds for this year are:
-Insecticidal Soap: Keeps away aphids and a myriad other soft-bodied creatures that would eat my veggies and gardenias… WAY better than a few squirts of dish soap in a spray bottle that I used to use. (See Review Here:

-Diatomaceous Earth: Made from crushed up sea creatures and it microscopically cuts and desicates soft bodied bugs that plague your life such as caterpillars and fleas (perhaps not in your garden, but in your life!)
-Bird-Proof Netting: Keeps my birds and my dogs from leaping into raised beds and snacking on the fruits of my labors!
My baby hasn’t arrived yet, so while I have really enjoyed reading the Green Baby Guide and my copy of the Eco-Nomical Baby Guide, I haven’t got any comments I can share yet on how I employ the ideas I’ve learned. I can share a few gardening ideas, though! For pesky bugs on my tomatoes and herbs, I use Organocide, made by Organic Laboratories, Inc. I got it at Lowe’s and it wasn’t expensive. It’s made of fish oil and sesame oil, so it’s stinky, but you just mix it with water in a spray bottle and mist the troubled plants. It takes a few applications on consecutive days to get all the critters but it works and there’s no danger to you. I also use my pet birds’ bath water or dirty drinking water to water the plants. They get poop in the water, so that dirty water is full of fertilizer! I just pour the containers right out into my herb pots, etc. My birds are two pet pigeons but I’m sure poo from cockatiels, parakeets and other herbivore birds would be a-ok, too. You can mix droppings right into your compost bin or right into the soil of your gardens, too. The plants seem to really like it!
Thanks for the tips, Erin, Erin, and Krissy! I have always gardened organically, in that I never use pesticides or anything, but I still feel like such a novice!
I also love organic gardening! Its teh best way to eat fruits and vegetables I think. Being able to sustain your own garden will become more beneficial than we can ever imagine when mankind starts going to space, and there is a self sustaining garden in every space ship!
I love diatomaceous earth. Great product. Use at the base of the plant. Be careful with the oil products. They can burn your plants if used incorrectly.
Also, homemade compost to fertilize OR FoxFarmFertilizer – the one with WormCastings and BatGuano – THE BEST!!!
