Do You Grow Your Own Food?

If–due to some natural disaster or some sort of post-apocalyptic situation–I’m ever forced to live off the land, I’m not sure I’d survive. Sure, I’ve messed around with gardening. Last year I had a bumper crop of tomatoes! But can a family of three survive on tomatoes alone? Probably not.

What about you? Do you grow your own food? Do you dream of growing all your own food?

  1. This is my second year of gardening. We have a couple garden boxes that I’m trying to get something out of. I haven’t had much success, but I’m still trying and learning. I hope someday to grow everything we eat. I think that day is not going to happen soon…but it will happen I hope! If I didn’t have young children I’d turn my entire yard into a food-producing garden. Someday…

  2. This is my second year gardening as well. Every year I get over excited and buy too many baby plants (almost $200 worth the first year! Youthful exuberance, I suppose!) but I’m getting better. I’m learning what grows here and what doesn’t, and I agree with Rebecca that the relaxing zen of gardening matters a lot. I’m paying $200 for months of zen instead of that for a massage and a facial one day. Plus, I feel so much more in touch with nature fighting my little garden nemesis and watching the cycle of life out there… If it’s not paying for itself yet (the fact that I’m a lazy gardener and take a lot of vacations, which hinders productivity) but when I get the rush out of a day’s bountiful harvest… that pays for itself a little!
