Baby’s First Trip to the Beach

Beach Combing

Beach Combing

We’re headed to the beach next month to enjoy some fun in the sun, and I can’t wait!  I’m excited to watch Frances take in an assortment of new sights, sounds, smells and tastes on her first tropical vacation. I was hoping she would be able to run around on the beach, but I think it will be a more relaxing trip since she is not yet walking. Unless she has a huge breakthrough in the next two weeks, I expect her to spend most of her vacation time sitting.

Which brings me to my question. If I were 10 months old, what would I like to play with on vacation? And no, Mama’s cell phone is not an option. But it better be at least as exciting as all the flotsam and seawater she will be drawn to ingest.

Since we have to pay for checked bags, we’re hoping to travel light. And I would prefer to not resort to buying a bunch of cheap plastic junk from the beach vendors. To top it off, Franci’s toy-of-the-moment is her set of wooden blocks. Unless we want to return home with half as many as we started with, I figure we should leave the tiny toys at home.

So I’m at a loss. I have no idea what to pack for her, so I hope someone has a few suggestions for me!

  1. How about looking online for a resale shop in the area where you’ll be and calling ahead to find out what they have, and if they’d be willing to set aside a few things for you. You could donate or sell back anything you can’t return home with. Or check out Craigslist. We found a booster seat just like we have at home, mint condition, cheap, on Craiglist when we traveled this summer. The seller even delivered it to us!

  2. Oooh, “tropical vacation”. My ideas might not work so well. I should read more carefully. In that case I’d shop at home, and find a few small items of great enjoyment that won’t be missed if lost while on holiday. Blocks, a ball, board books, stacking cups, stacking cars, those stacking cups/balls that fit inside each other, and hey, even a bunch of straws, paper cups, and paper plates bought on the fly make great cheap baby toy when you’re low on toys. Or a box of tissues.

  3. Coriander, thank you so much for the ideas! I scoured the local FB kid’s Buy/Sell/Trade site and found a set of toys we can bring with us and leave there.

It’s a good selection, so it should keep Fraces entertained and I won’t have to worry about keeping track of them!

FYI – We’re taking some plastic buckets and shovels.

    Yay! That’s great!
