We’ve tried cleaning with just Vinegar and Baking Soda, and it wasn’t for us. The smell alone was enough to make us switch back to natural products we’ve liked in the past. Here are a few of them, plus the only book you’ll need as a reference!
The Toxin-Free Home
Knowledge is power, so if you want to keep your home clean and free of toxins, you might need to hit the books. There’s always the internet, but we prefer a more reliable source when it comes to something as important as our family. That’s why we keep a copy of The Toxin-Free Home: A Guide to Maintaining a Clean, Eco-Friendly, and Healthy Home by Alison Haynes on hand to help us navigate everything from VOCs, eco-friendly materials and cleaning supplies, allergens and stain removal.
In addition to providing instructions on how to keep a house clean without the use of harsh chemicals, The Toxin-Free Home contains recipes for task-specific chores and even some for beauty care. Haynes also compares building materials to help you choose the best flooring, wall coverings and kitchen appliances.
Whether you’re already mixing your own cleaning sprays and laundry detergent, or if you are interested in trying it, you’ll find plenty of good advice in The Toxin-Free Home. We especially recommend it if you are looking to build or remodel, since Haynes goes over the “best” materials for each room in your house.
The tag-line of the Nixall Cleanser is, “Strong enough for a hospital, gentle enough for a crib”. That’s exactly what we are looking for in a cleaning product!
Nixall uses Anolyte Water as a base for its Household Cleanser. Anolyte Water is made by running an electrical charge through a salt water to create a hypochlorous acid solution. Hypochlorous acid is produced by the body naturally and has been used since WWI to prevent sepsis and help the body heal wounds faster, and pathogenic microorganisms do not develop a resistance to it.
According to Nixall’s website, “Hypochlorous acid, in the body works to break down the cells that are creating the infection by destroying the cell membrane and its DNA, thus halting the replication or growth process. When utilized as an application outside the human body, hypochlorous acid works in much the same way, destroying the cell membranes of harmful bacteria and germs that reside on our skin, or in our environment.”
For even more disinfecting power, they have a Disinfectant/Sanitizer too. It kills a wide range of bacteria, including drug resistant bacterium, viruses, and germs, but has a shelf life of 30 days versus one year for the cleanser. Both products are eco-friendly because Hypochlorous Acid is a naturally occurring molecule.
Rockin’ Green Soap
One point of information that all parents agree on is that we do a lot of laundry. There are plenty of ways to “green” your washing and drying routine, but probably the easiest is to use an eco-friendly detergent.
Rockin’ Green Laundry Detergent is free of harmful chemicals that can irritate sensitive baby skin and the environment. They are made with a biodegradable plant-based surfactant, the ingredient in detergent that separates the grime from the cloth and even cloth diapers. The surfactant is petroleum-free and septic safe.
Like all good eco-friendly products, Rockin’ Green Laundry Detergent is free of Parabens, Phthalates, Artificial Fragrances and is not tested on animals. It get gets your clothes clean without optical brighteners, sodium hypochlorite, phospohates and a bunch of other chemicals we can’t pronounce! Most importantly, they work. Our laundry is clean and smells great, thanks to essential oils. We especially love the Lavender Mint Revival. And what other company makes a detergent called Smashing Watermelon?
We generally use cloth towels and floor wipes, but sometimes the situation calls for disposable. Right now we’re liking the rayon made from bamboo floor wipes and perforated towels by NatureZway. Bamboo is a fast growing grass that doesn’t require fertilizers or pesticides. It’s self-generating when cut, meaning it doesn’t need to be replanted. Bamboo protects soil from erosion and reduces green house gases, too, so these products are Eco-Friendly and economical. Just what we love!
NatureZway Floor Wipes
When used dry, the NatureZway Floor Wipes collect dust and debris as well as conventional products. They are durable and can be used on all types of flooring. You can also use NatureZway Floor Wipes with your regular cleaner or to clean up spills. They are extra absorbent and don’t fall apart. If you’re feeling extra thrifty, they can be rinsed and reused.
NatureZway Perforated Towels
These are not your ordinary paper towel (besides being made from bamboo and not trees). NatureZway Perforated Towels don’t fall apart when wet. They are so durable, each sheet can be rinsed and reused up to 100 times! Since they are extra absorbent, they are great for cleaning up spills. They are safe for all surfaces, and can be used with your favorite cleaner. We always keep a roll in our camper since they are a perfect multi-use towel that lasts the whole weekend and can be thrown away at the end.
No matter how clean our house is, there’s that one spot that has an odor we can’t get rid of. We’ve tried spritzing essential oil and using cedar planks and balls, but those are short term solutions. For those problem areas, we use Fresh Wave.
The Fresh Wave products are non-toxic and use natural extracts of lime, pine needle, aniseed, clove and cedarwood to combat odors. They don’t contain alcohol, are Phthalate free and made in the USA. According to Fresh Wave, “The Fresh Wave formula is blended plant extracts and water. The way in which the extracts and water blend create several reactions which encapsulate an odor molecule. The molecule then becomes absorbed by our formula, broken down natural and rendered odorless.”
For closets, drawers and cars, we like the Fresh Wave Packs and Gel. They last a long time, up to 60 days, and slowly release a subtle sent that doesn’t smell like an air freshener. The Packs contain recyclable plastic that holds the Fresh Wave liquid.
As for the diaper pail, we make sure to use the Fresh Wave Spray to keep odors in check. It also works great in trash cans, pet beds and shoes.
