Earth’s Care Sweet Almond Oil
If we could pack only one item in our toilet kit, it would be a high-quality cold-pressed oil. Our favorite this summer is Earth’s Care Sweet Almond Oil. This 100% natural oil is expeller-pressed from dried almond kernels and is rich in Vitamin E, mono-unsaturated fatty acids, proteins, potassium and zinc.
Earth’s Care Sweet Almond Oil is a great facial (and whole-body) moisturizer not just because it is light and absorbs easily, but the Vitamin E helps protect against UV radiation damage and can even reduce the appearance of sun spots and wrinkles. To maximize the moisturizing benefits of the oil, we apply it to wet skin before toweling off.
For hair that’s seen too many days in the pool and sun, we apply Sweet Almond Oil to the ends before we hop in the shower to prevent split ends. After showering, we use it to tame flyaways and as a detangler.
Years ago we switched from using gentle face soap to Oil Cleansing in our daily routine. Instead of lathering up with soap, we apply a thin layer of antioxidant-rich oil, such as Earth’s Care Sweet Almond Oil, to dry skin and gently wipe it off with a hot, wet washcloth. The oil binds with dirt, pollutants, bacteria and general grime, and the moist washcloth gently removes both the oil and impurities while leaving our skin soft and hydrated. If you have acne-prone skin, we highly recommend Oil Cleansing. Soaps are designed to strip your face of all oil (along with the grime), which triggers the body to produce excess oil in response and leads to even more oily skin and clogged pores.
Sweet Almond Oil is hypoallergenic and makes a great massage oil for babies, too, especially if you add a few drops of their Lavender Oil to calm and sooth them.
Earth’s Care has a wide variety of other carrier oils, essential oils and skin care and therapeutic products.
Good Earth Beauty Shampoo Bar with tea tree oil and lavender
We have tried our fair share of shampoos that claim to be better for your hair than conventional products. They either don’t work, or have so many ingredients they might as well be conventional. We love that the Shampoo Bar with Tea Tree Oil and Lavender by Good Earth Beauty has just a few ingredients: saponified organic oils of coconut, olive, castor, rice bran and safflower, tea tree and lavender essential oil. The tea tree and lavender help break down oils on the scalp and relieve dry itchy skin.
If you haven’t tried shampoo bars yet, we recommend you see for yourself how great they can be. Shampoo bars make it especially easy to target the roots of your hair and scalp and avoid the brittle ends. They also last forever, meaning less money and less packaging.
Good Earth Beauty Pure Coconut Conditioner
Sometimes our hair needs more than a light conditioner but less than a hair mask. That’s when we reach for Good Earth Beauty’s Pure Coconut Conditioner. They’ve blended Coconut Milk and Organic Aloe Vera with Organic Olive, Jojoba, Avocado, Evening Primrose, and Borage Oils along with Organic Shea Butter and Colloidal Oatmeal. The result is a conditioner that packs a moisturizing punch without leaving hair feeling greasy or heavy.
The natural coconut fragrance is light and formulated in collaboration with m.o.d Perfumery. Best of all, this vegan conditioner is free of parabens, pesticides, petroleum, propylene glycol, phthalates, sulfates, and artificial colors.
Creatrix Solutions Tallow Balm
We’ve tried plenty of moisturizers in our time, but this was our first experience with tallow. Tallow is fat rendered from animals, usually cows or sheep. Creatrix Solutions sources their tallow from the kidneys of grass range fed, antibiotic and hormone-free beef.
We were surprised at how easily the Tallow Balm absorbed into our skin and left it feeling extra soft and not a bit greasy. Tallow is all-natural and contains vitamins A, D, K and E. These fat soluble vitamins are absorbed into the skin, which means they nourish inside and out.
GuruNanda Pulling Oil
Oil Pulling is an Ayurvedic medical technique that involves swishing oil around your mouth and pulling it through your teeth for anywhere from two to fifteen minutes. The oil pulling increases the secretion of saliva and the oil itself traps toxins found in saliva within
We’ve been hearing about oil pulling more and more over the last fours years and first tried it when our first baby was on the way. Pregnancy aversions derailed us because of the strong flavor of the straight coconut oil we were using, as well as the overwhelming mouthfeel. We finally decided to try it again, this time with GuruNanda Pulling Oil. It contains a blend of organic Sesame, Sunflower, Coconut and Peppermint Oils. We like the balance of oils because it keeps the mixture from feeling to heavy and the peppermint is refreshing.
We’re starting with a few minutes of oil pulling and plan to work up to more. Aside from the prospect of getting rid of toxins, we’re interested to see if oil pulling with have an effect on our dental health and teeth stains.
One point of information we didn’t know a few years ago is that you must brush your teeth after spitting out the oil. Otherwise some oil will remain on your teeth and can cause dental issues. And, of course, you never want to swallow the oil since it is full of the toxins you are trying to get rid of!
Gurunanda sells a variety of Ayurvedic products, essential oils and carrier oils as well.
Key West Aloe Key Lime Shampoo & Conditioner
We’re pretty picky about our hair care, since conventional products leave our locks dry and brittle or flat and greasy. We usually stick with gentle formulas and shampoo only a couple of times a week to let the natural body oils do their thing. Every once and awhile the buildup becomes obvious and we need to remove excess oil with a nice, sudsy shampoo. Which means we need to follow it up with a creamy conditioner!
The Key Lime Shampoo and Conditioner from Key West is a deliciously fragrant set that contains 20% Aloe Vera and is pH balanced. Besides the Aloe Vera, it contains Apple Extract, Papaya Fruit Extract, Lime Fruit Extract, and Chamomile Flower Extract. These natural ingredients leave hair shiny and manageable. We like that the shampoo doesn’t strip out too much of our natural oils, and the conditioner is light and effective. While we only use them when our scalp needs a good cleaning, they are gentle enough for everyday use.
Hair La Vie “Revive” Deep Hydration Masque
We have split ends that just won’t quit, so a deep conditioner is a must for us. The Hair La Vie “Revive” Deep Hydration Masque
is a nice thick formula that coats our hair and provides a deep conditioning and a deep cleaning for our scalp. If you have several dry hair, we suggest leaving a little in when you wash it out for extra moisture and shine.
It contains a list of happy hair ingredients, including Argan Oil, Keratin, Coconut Oil, Avocado Oil, Horsetail Extract, Bamboo Extract, Vitamin E, Jojoba Seed, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Vitamin D3, and Pro-Vitamin B5. It does not contain parabens, phthalates, dyes or alcohol.
