Recipe: Peanut Butter Almond Date Balls

Snacky Goodness

Snacky Goodness

Now that Allison has started solid foods, Franci has become more open to trying new things and has even become a huge fan of foods she refused to eat for the last year and a half, such as avocado and sweet potato.

Although I don’t want to complain about the fact that she is eating a wider variety of vegetables, and even meat, than her baby days, there is still one challenge we have yet to overcome: daycare lunch. It seems that no matter what I pack as the main course, it comes back untouched. Even if it is something she will eat at home, such as grilled cheese or the aforementioned sweet potato.

Recipe: Wholesome Organic Peanut Butter Banana “Milkshake”

Healthy "Milkshake"

Healthy “Milkshake”

I’ve been trying to find ways to sneak protein into Franci’s diet since she stopped eating the super-purees I used to make her.  She won’t eat tofu, fish or beans, and only keeps meat in her mouth long enough to suck out all the flavor before spitting out the fibers.

After doing a little research on non-dairy milk, I decided Non-GMO organic soy milk was a good source of protein to begin incorporating into her diet. Then I decided to add a little of this, a little of that, and the High-Protein Peanut Butter Banana “Milkshake” was born.

“Unshopping” Month Update

Franci's Rummage Sale Finds

Franci’s Rummage Sale Finds

I wish we could claim ultimate success during our “unshopping” month, but we’ve had a few slip-ups. Nothing to loose sleep over, but enough that I’m going to extend the challenge to see if I can actually succeed for a few weeks.

Allison and I made a last-minute trip to Rebecca’s book release party, and I was able to confine my spending to consumables, but there were probably too many of those.  Oh, and those pairs of used overalls and sunglasses for Franci to wear gardening are not edible.  As much as I wanted to avoid buying anything for the girls, I’ve been looking for overalls for months and hadn’t found any second-hand until then.  I just couldn’t pass it up.

Product Review and Giveaway: All Good GOOP and Kid’s Sunscreen

Elemental Herbs

When it comes to skincare, we usually stick to the basics. That means if we’re not making our own lotion or shampoo, we look for products that contain a few simple ingredients that get the job done. Elemental Herbs has many great products, and including an all-purpose healing balm and several sunscreens.

Besides using organic, medicinal quality ingredients, the Elemental Herbs facility runs on solar power, and all products are cruelty-free. They are an Eco-friendly corporation you can feel good about supporting. For more information, take a look here.

All Good GOOP Healing Balm

Healing Balm

Healing Balm

We live in a dry, high altitude climate that can be harsh on the skin. Dry, cracked skin and rough cheeks are a regular occurrence in our household, enough that Franci frequently requests “lotion” for her “owies”. I feel comfortable rubbing on a little bit of All Good GOOP, because I recognize all the ingredients (and usually put them in my own balm, when I actually have time to make it).

Eco-Friendly Kickstarter Campaigns

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about the Little Lotus Kickstarter campaign, and then it occurred to me that there are probably dozens of sustainable and Eco-friendly campaigns going on right now.  I decided to do a little looking around to find other Kickstarter campaigns going on right now that are worth your consideration.

Aquasana Filter Bottle

We reviewed Aquasana’s glass water bottle last year and it is still my favorite glass water bottle. When I heard they were starting a Kickstarter Campaign to design and manufacture a filter bottle, I was excited to check out their idea and support their campaign.

Snipe Hunt Review

Now that spring is in full swing and summer is just around the corner, we’re on the lookout for outdoor games and activities to keep Franci occupied. She will spend hours at her water table playing imaginary games and getting nice and wet, but I’m not willing to set it up for short-term play.  I have to be sure she’s going to be at it for at least a couple of hours on a day that is warm enough to be in wet clothes.

We found a great short-term activity that is perfect for outdoors, but is also good for indoor fun as well.  For months, one of her favorite games has been Hide and Seek, and Snipe Hunt takes it to a whole new level.  The best part is that I don’t have to do the hiding or seeking myself!

Recipe: Almond Cream

Almond Cream

If you’re looking for a quick and easy dessert for Mother’s Day, this simple Almond Cream is perfect! It only takes a few minutes to make, requires no skill in the kitchen, and tastes like a special occasion! I like to serve it with raspberries, but any fresh berries, stone fruit or even a compote will compliment the light almond flavor.

Especially if you are serving a rich dinner, Almond Cream is a dessert that is light and will satisfy your sweet tooth without leaving you feeling stuffed.

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

Baby Sitting

Baby Sitting

Of course every mom loves her children, but absence makes the heart grow fonder (as we all know).  Flowers and breakfast in bed might be classic Mother’s Day gifts, but if you want to give her a present she actually wants, nothing beats an hour or two of babysitting; especially if you let mom choose the day and time.

Whether she decides to spend the time getting her hair done, grabbing lunch with a friend or just taking a nap, it is a gift that is worth more than money itself.

Unconventional Gifts

For the Traveler

For the Traveler

Nothing says, “I love you” like a gift that is specially tailored to the recipient.  If your mom isn’t the conventional type, she will surely see the thought behind an unusual gift.

May Unshopping Challenge

Garage Sale Toys

Sorry, Franci!

About once a month, around the time the bills come trickling in, my husband and I have the same conversation. It goes a little something like this:

“I have everything I need right now. There is seriously nothing else I need to buy.”
“Me too! I just bought a pair of shoes and now I really don’t need anything else at all.”

Yet somehow, the next day we find ourselves having an opposite conversation:

“I think our living room could use another side table.”
“Amazon is having a sale on dog toys right now and our dog has almost chewed through the current one.”
