Swimming with Babies

Water Baby

Water Baby

When I took Francis to her first toddler swim class, she was the youngest by far (about 4 months old).  I could tell from the very beginning she loved water and believe it’s never too soon to get children comfortable around water. I’ve always showered with our girls instead of bathing them, as soon as their cord fell off in fact.  I take time to make sure they get plenty of water on their faces and are used to that particular sensation.

A few weeks ago Allison attended her first swim class and had a great time.  It helps that it took place in the warmer therapy pool.  I wish I had more time to take her so she gets as much exposure as Franci, who goes to the pool a couple of times a month with her grandmother.

Celebrating Earth Day

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 with the goal of supporting environmental protection.  As Eco-Conscious parents, we try to make green choices every day, but any cause for celebration is more than welcome!  Here are a few ideas to help your family honor the Earth.

Let us know in the comments how you are celebrating Earth Day today!

 Choose Local

The farther food and other goods have to travel, the more carbon emission are released into the atmosphere.  Buying local not only reduces your own carbon footprint, but supports your community at the same time.

Whether you are visiting a farmer’s market or a shop that sells locally-made items, buying local also strengthen ties within the community and builds a happier, safer environment for your family.

Boob Nursing Wear

Nurse in Comfort

Nurse in Comfort

We have always been big supporters of breastfeeding, for so many reasons, and every breastfeeding Mama knows that the right support makes all the difference.  Whether it be your family, workplace,  local lactation consultant, or the new Mamava Lactation Station at the airport, every little bit of encouragement counts.

A little physical support doesn’t hurt either, especially when it comes to nursing bras.  Boob Fast Food T Shirt Bras are comfortable enough to sleep in.  And like all the Boob maternity and nursing apparel, they are made with sustainable materials like organic cotton, fleece made from recycled bottles.  And they only work with factories that adhere to their strict code of conduct to ensure their workers receive a decent pay.

Little Lotus Kickstarter to Help Vulnerable Infants in Developing Countries

Embrace Warmer

Embrace Warmer

It’s easy to take for granted the tools we have in the US to care for premature and at risk babies. For example, there isn’t a hospital in this country that doesn’t have an incubator to help underweight babies regulate their body temperature.

In developing countries, hospitals don’t always have enough incubators, or even the electricity to run an incubator. While I don’t know this fact for certain, I can only imagine that small or remote villages don’t have an incubator handy for premature babies or low weight babies at risk of hypothermia.

Why Choose Cacao Over Cocoa?

"The Nourishing Food That Aids Digestion"

“The Nourishing Food That Aids Digestion”

They come from the same plant and look the same when powdered, but are Cacao and Cocoa the same thing?  Both are derived from the dried and fermented seed that comes from the Theobroma cacao tree, from which we also get cocoa butter. Are there any other differences?

Cacao beans naturally contain fiber, sulfur, essential fatty acids and minerals such as iron, magnesium, copper, and zinc.  They also contain  phenylethylamine and anandamide, which keep you alert and make you feel happy.

Cacao and cocoa powder rate high on the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) scale, often being scored in the top 10, which means it is a good source of antioxidants.  Like most “nutrient powerhouses”, the more processing done to the cacao beans, the less benefits they retain.

Garden to Table with Kids

Winter garden plantingSpring has sprung and now is the perfect time to get your hands in the dirt!  Whether you are ready to commit to a full garden or just a planter or two of flowers, gardening is a great activity for the whole family.  The more involved your kids are with food production, the more they are likely to try something new.  The phenomenon of planting seeds or seedlings and watching them gown into vegetables can spark the curiosity of even the pickiest of eaters.

Re-Grow Kitchen ScrapsIMG_20150404_145426 (1)

Next time you’re cooking a meal, consider re-growing some of the ingredients instead of tossing the scraps in the trash.  Depending on where you live, you might not have luck getting your avocado pit to turn into a fruit-bearing tree, but it can still be fun and educational to watch the seed turn into a plant.

Book Review: Broken Homes & Gardens

broken-homes-and-gardensWhen Rebecca and Joy started The Green Baby Guide blog in 2007, they were busy compiling all their best green and frugal tips into a handy book at the same time: The Eco-nomical Baby Guide: Down-to-Earth Ways for Parents to Save Money and the Planet.

Eight years later, Rebecca is long past her daughter’s baby days (though her frugality and eco-consciousness remain) and is on the verge of publishing another book.  Her first novel, Broken Homes & Gardens, is already available for pre-order on Amazon and will be released on April 28.

When I first read the blurb, “When Harry Met Sally for the Millennial generation…” I thought, “We’ll see about that!”  Well, it certainly is – and in the best possible way!  I was so absorbed in the will-they-won’t they plot I read it in one day.  Or course, when I’m exclusively breastfeeding I tend to read a lot of novels.
