Natural Bath and Beauty Products Reviews and Giveaways!

Earth’s Care Sweet Almond Oil

Earth's Care Sweet Almond OilIf we could pack only one item in our toilet kit, it would be a high-quality cold-pressed oil.  Our favorite this summer is Earth’s Care Sweet Almond Oil. This 100% natural oil is expeller-pressed from dried almond kernels and is rich in Vitamin E, mono-unsaturated fatty acids, proteins, potassium and zinc.

Earth’s Care Sweet Almond Oil is a great facial (and whole-body) moisturizer not just because it is light and absorbs easily, but the Vitamin E helps protect against UV radiation damage and can even reduce the appearance of sun spots and wrinkles. To maximize the moisturizing benefits of the oil, we apply it to wet skin before toweling off.

Frego Glass and Silicone Food Storage Containers Review and Giveaway!

fregoWe made the switch to glass storage containers years ago, so we’ve had a chance to try all the usual glass brands.  Now it looks like there’s a new kid on the block, and this one comes with an outer layer of silicone!

Each Frego Storage Container has three parts: the glass insert that holds the food; an outer silicone layer that cradles the glass; and an airtight silicone lid.

Not only does the silicone sleeve protect the glass container from breaking, it also protects your fingers from the hot or cold contents.  We appreciate that feature because both the silicone and glass are oven, freezer and dishwasher safe, top or bottom rack.

Picnic Essentials and Giveaways!

Whether it’s at the park, beach, river or forest, we love summer picnics!  Our kids jump at any chance to get away from home, even if it’s just for an hour or two.  The break in routine alleviates summer boredom and they get to run wild without wrecking the house, which makes mom (and therefore kids) happy.

The best part about picnics is that you don’t have to go very far to enjoy fresh air and a bit of nature.  Oh, and all that running around wears the kids out while we get to relax in the shade on a blanket!  With the right essentials, a picnic can be a quick and low-stress activity for the whole family to enjoy.

Summer Must Haves for the Family and Giveaways!

Sunforgettable Brush

sunforgettable-brushIf you’re going to spend the day at the beach or a whole day in the sun, it makes sense to lather up the family with sun screen.  If you’re just going for a walk or hitting the park for half an hour, it’s tempting to just skip the sunscreen and save the time and effort.  Especially if you use “natural” sunscreens that are greasy or are a pain to rub in.

That’s why we love the Sunforgettable Brush!  We keep it in our purse all summer for quick applications or when we forget to put on sunscreen before heading out. It’s a brush-on powder sunscreen made with minerals and free of dyes, chemicals, colorants, and perfumes.  This means it can be used on adults, kids, and even family members with rosacea or eczema

Stojo Collapsible Reusable Silicone Coffee Cup and Travel Mug

Stojo Cup

Stojo Collapsible Silicone Travel Mug

Travel mugs have a reputation for taking up too much space in your commuter bag and being easy to forget at home. Besides the bulk, there are various drawbacks to traditional travel mugs. Either they are stainless steel, which may be great for insulation but forget about reheating in the microwave! Even BPA-free plastic travel mugs are bulky and can only be microwaved and dish washed (top rack only) so many times before they begin to crack. Ceramic travels mugs are dishwasher and microwave safe, but breakable and better left at home or the office instead or tossing in your backpack.

Preparing For Cold and Flu Season

We started this post last November, but then we spent most of winter fighting off the colds and flues we should have been preparing for!  The winter storm we got last week reminded us that the season isn’t over yet!  If anything, it can be even harder on the immune system to go from snow pants to shorts in the span of a few days.

Here’s what we’ve been keeping on hand to help us through cold and flu season!

Chyawanprash

Product Review: Aketta Cricket Powder

Cricket Powder

It’s that time of year again! World Edible Insect Day was October 23rd! What? You forgot to celebrate this exciting event, you say? You’ve never even heard of it, you say? Eating insects is disgusting, you say?

It may be time to reevaluate our relationship to insects and entamophagy (the eating of bugs). The fact is, most of the world actually eats insects on a regular basis, and because they are cheap, easy to grow, and use infinitely less resources than any other form of protein, bugs may be the wave of the future for us all.

Thanks to Aspire Food Group, located in Austin, TX, I was able to try my hand at using their finely milled cricket powder in my everyday cooking. The product is pure cricket, ground to a powder comprised of 68% protein. I was pleased to find out that these insects enjoy a better diet than most humans. Aspire’s crickets feed exclusively on local, organic fare, and drink only reverse-osmosis filtered water. Reverse osmosis, people. Let that sink in for a moment.

Halloween Candy Exchange Ideas

candy

No thanks!

Our girls are a little young to be trick-or-treating, but that hasn’t stopped me from thinking about what we’ll do with all that candy once we do! Last year we wrote about our decision to stop giving out sweets and giving out alternitives to candy. We’ve actually been blogging about non-edible Halloween treats for years, which leads me to believe we’re not the only parents figuring out what to do with all that candy.

I was about to write up my own list of organizations that accept Halloween candy and other uses for the candy, but it looks like Kid’s Health has already done it for me.  One of the most well known and best organized programs is Operation Gratitude that encourages you to send your kids’ candy to our Troops. Find out how on their website.
