Solutions for Nighttime Yeast Infections Caused by Cloth Diapers

We all want to consider the health of the planet, but when our babies end up with reoccurring rashes and yeast infections from cloth diapers at night, it can be tempting to switch to disposables.  I did.  Of course, first there were weeks of trouble shooting, but then exhaustion set in and I surrendered to disposables.  I tried to switch back several times, all with the same results.

Nighttime Cloth Diapering Success Stories

Yesterday Joy attempted to solve her nighttime cloth diapering problem using cloth diaper history. Ever since we started the Green Baby Guide in 2007, she’s been puzzling over her nighttime diaper dilemma, and after trying many of our readers’ suggestions, she still hasn’t found a way to prevent yeast infections with nighttime cloth diapering.

The Nighttime Disposable Diaper Dilemma

This entry is from GBG’s first month of blogging, back in December of 2007.  Now that I’m in the middle of raising our second baby, it’s amazing how true those memories of sleep deprivation have become once again.  We’re still managing with just cloth this time but I’ll keep you posted on whether we face the disposable diaper dilemma with our second as well!

Several months ago I shared that my dark diapering secret online.  Even though we only used disposables at night, I hated having to toss the waste into the trash. Since my son out-wet our cloth diapers, it seemed there was no other option.

Thanks to our wise readers’ comments, I tried pocket diapers with him a few months later and was thrilled.  No more wetting in the night!  This also meant no more trips to the grocery store to haul home disposables.  The sky was brighter, the birds sang more sweetly, and our garbage was delightfully emptier.

Then Roscoe started to develop yeast infections on a regular basis.  We tried creams, giving him “naked time,” and sunlight, but the infections persisted.  Finally, in desperation, we switched back to disposables at night and Roscoe’s redness completely cleared up.
