Post-Partum Weight Loss on The Flat Belly Diet

For the last year, I’ve been about four months pregnant–or so it would seem from my bulging belly.  Elastic waistbands have been my friends while my actual pre-baby clothes have been sitting up in the attic for years.  Although I’ve tried everything from exercise boot camps to Spark People, my body has stubbornly held those pounds and even added a few more.

I was almost resigned to accept my flabby-bellied fate until a friend of mine mentioned a diet she had just started.  It had no limitations, but required her to eat avocado, dark chocolate, nuts, olives, or olive oil at every meal.  Since those are some of my favorite foods, I checked out the book The Flat Belly Diet immediately from our local library.

Three Tips for Dropping the Baby Weight While Saving the Planet

For the last year, my body has doggedly clung to ten pounds of baby weight.  I could blame it on nursing, but more likely it was caused by the stress induced eating habits and lack of exercise.  Now that it’s summer and I’m officially a SAHM, I have the time to make some major shifts toward a healthier lifestyle. This week’s posts are dedicated to the pursuit of green, budget weight loss!

  1. Eat whole foods.

Isn’t this totally obvious?   Maybe, but I seem to have to relearn this tip when life becomes hectic.  Food processing requires energy, packaging, and preservatives—adding a huge carbon load and calorie count to our meals and making our grocery bills far more expensive.  If we stick to foods fresh from our gardens, farmer’s markets or the produce aisle, we can slim down our bodies and our budgets.

The Post-Baby Body Blues

For the past twelve weeks I’ve watched calories, joined Baby Boot Camp (an outdoor exercise class for a postpartum workout), and have breastfed this hungry baby of mine every two hours.  I’ve lost four measly pounds from my post-birth weight.  While part of me just wants to throw up my hands and cry into my steel cut oats, the other part of me realizes that patience is key.

losing weight after babySome of us shed weight easily while breastfeeding but apparently twenty percent of us have bodies that actually hold onto pounds while nursing.  I must fit into that lucky fraction because it seems that weight loss was actually easier before I had the baby.  How can that be?

The Saturday Question: How Did You Lose the Baby Weight on a Budget?

If you’re not willing to invest the money or gasoline to drive to the gym a few times a week, is it possible to drop those post-baby pounds?  Absolutely! (Rebecca wrote about free post-pregnancy workouts here.)  But it’s great to hear the creative ways that you’ve found to drop weight without breaking the bank or hurting the environment.  How have you cut calories and found free ways to exercise?  I’m packing on the pounds this pregnancy and already looking forward to being able to be active again so I’m looking forward to your tips!
